Gateway to Space

Way back in freshman year, my team and I created an experimental BalloonSat which tested the possibility of orienting a box rising on a weather balloon using the location of the sun and air resistance. We placed luminosity sensors on multiple sides of the box to tell where the sun was in the sky. An Arduino used this information to tilt wings on the box so that air drag would turn the box to face one side towards the sun. It didn't work this time, but it was trying to! Maybe with some better control software this could be a viable technology.

This video shows a test of our prototype. Not shown is a large fan blowing air down onto the BalloonSat to simulate it rising through the air.

This video is a compilation (with very dramatic music) showing our process throughout the class of building, testing, and flying our prototype. It's a little long (images of space are at the end :).
